About Helen and Alan

Helen Spinney and Alan Spinney live in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. We work with oil paints, and occasionally watercolour and other media.

Helen’s artist statement:

“ ‘Impressions of realism’ is my current style of painting.  The more I paint and learn, the fewer paint strokes I hope to use, more to suggest than to paint detail.
I have been painting since 2006, and using oil paints since 2007.
When selecting a reference photo, I am usually drawn to an image that has both dark and light areas or interesting shadows.”

Alan’s artist statement:

“When I paint, I feel as if I am interpreting a scene or a moment. My background in advertising and graphic design has focused on working with shapes, colours and patterns, but painting is a wonderful new experience. Who would have thought that so many moods and atmospheres could be created with paint, and that the painter could bring something of him or herself to the finished work?”
